CALL FOR CERTIFICATE LEVEL COURSE IN PSYCHOSOCIAL COUNSELING

Introduction

Alliance for Social Dialogue (ASD) is pleased to announce scholarships at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai (www.tiss.edu) for a six month certificate course in psychosocial counselling beginning in mid November, 2015. Given our recent experience with the April 25 earthquake and the subsequent aftershocks, these scholarships aim to enhance the capacity of community-based individuals, especially in areas of psychosocial counselling to ensure holistic earthquake rebuilding efforts and also community focused disaster preparedness for the future.

The scholarships for psychosocial counseling are particularly targeted towards individuals who are embedded at the community level and are in the best position to provide both immediate and long term psychosocial support to those affected by the earthquake. The long term impact on the psychosocial wellbeing of the affected population needs to be carefully monitored to ensure a smooth transitioning into normal lives and holistic approach to rebuilding in Nepal. A maximum of 25 individuals will be offered the opportunity to participate in the specifically designed course. The course has been developed as a dual mode program, with contact modules at Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) in Mumbai and a distance module during which fieldwork will be carried out in Nepal. ELIGIBILITY

The Program does not discriminate on the basis of age, race, color, sex, religion, sexual orientation, or disability. The competition is merit-based and open to those meeting the following criteria:

  • Individuals currently working in various capacities at the community level (teachers, health and mental health professionals, counselors, police officials, NGO /CBO professional networks etc) in the 14 most earthquake affected districts(Gorkha, Kavrepalanchok, Dhading, Nuwakot, Rasuwa, Sindupalchok, Dolakha, Ramechhap, Okhaldunga, Makwanpur, Sindhuli, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur);
  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of three years of experience;
  • Preferred educational backgrounds include B.A. in Social Sciences, B.A. in education, Bachelor’s in Nursing, M.B.B.S, and Master in Public Health;
  • Fluency in English and a working knowledge of Hindi is essential;
  • Be committed to utilizing the newly acquired knowledge and skills in their community.

SELECTION OF FINALISTS

Competition for the Certificate Course Scholarships is open, merit-based, and relies on a combination of an applicant’s suitability towards the program’s objectives and host university admissions criteria. Selection is made on the basis of academic excellence, professional aptitude, long-term commitment to furthering the profession in applicants’ home country, and English language proficiency.

Pre-selection: Submitted applications will be screened by an application review team.

Interviews and Final Selection: Semifinalists will be interviewed in-person or via videoconference by a committee. The committee will recommend finalists for placement at the host university.

All forms are to be completed in English with the exception of references which may be completed in Nepali if language is a barrier.   2. Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV), in English. Your educational and professional history.

ADDITIONAL DOCUMENTS: Submit all the documents to the Alliance for Social in the order given below. Translations or copies must be notarized. Applicant may not write or certify his/her own translation.

  1. Two recommendation letters. Must include the stamp or seal of the organization or university or be written on letterhead.
  2. Official copies of all university transcripts. Official transcripts must bear the stamp or seal of the department or faculty of the university that issued it. For the purposes of this program, a transcript is a list of every course taken to receive a diploma, and the grade received in each course.
  3. Certified English translations of university transcripts if applicable. English language transcripts must bear the stamp or seal of the department or faculty of the university that issued it.
  4. Official copies of all diplomas in original language. Official diploma must bear the stamp or seal of the department or faculty of the university that issued it.

VERIFICATION: The ASD reserves the right to verify all information submitted as part of an application. In the event that there is a discrepancy or information is found to be false, the applicant will be declared ineligible.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP

What is the Junior Policy Research Fellowship?

Alliance for Social Dialogue (ASD), which focuses on, among other areas,  empowerment and capacity building for future generations of policy activists, professionals and researchers to create a pool of policy-conscious community—is providing this opportunity as a response to the need for more young professionals to take part in policy-making processes.

ASD believes that the personal experience and commitment of young policy researchers and activists combined with the knowledge of policy-making and implementing processes will positively influence public policies and their effectiveness on the everyday life of the Nepali people.

The Junior Policy Research Fellowship is a program designed to develop the skills of recent graduates in policy research by working closely with the ASD team in preparing joint papers and briefs on topics covering the areas of Policy Priorities, Policy Formulation, Policy Contestation, Policy Reform, Policy Review Process and Challenges in Policy Implementation. This fellowship is specifically targeted to the recent graduates in education, legal studies, political science, public policy and administration, media, social work and sociology/anthropology.

Successful candidates will receive a locally determined stipend and an opportunity to work for three months in collaboration with the ASD team. The programme is designed to benefit the fellows, the host organization and the policy community.

Who can apply for this fellowship?

Nepali citizen, residing in the country with successful completion of bachelor’s degree in any field of social sciences is eligible for this program.

What is expected from the fellows?

This fellowship is a full-time work and the fellows should have commitment and priority for the research work. Throughout this period, the fellow is expected to engage in the ongoing policy-research projects and develop concrete policy products in consultation and collaboration with ASD. The fellow will work closely with the ASD team for the duration of the fellowship.

Depending upon the area of policy fellowship, the fellows will:

  • Visit Social Science Baha library five days a week and work on the research
  • Meet with ASD team once a week for progress update and further plans

The fellow’s work will be guided by the ASD team and mentors. At the beginning of the fellowship, an agreement will be made between the fellow and the ASD on the topic of the fellowship and the expected outputs. An action plan for fellowship period will also be developed. All fellows will be expected to produce the final draft by the end of the fellowship period.

The policy products of the research can be one or more of the following:

  • Review of existing policy documents or baseline study of policy process and practices
  • Present draft reports in the discussion sessions organized by ASD and different policy networks
  • Produce the report in the form of Policy Paper, Briefs or Newsletters
  • Present papers and findings of research in different dialogue programs organized by ASD
  • Any other policy-related product or activity that benefits both the fellows and the ASD (e.g., writing on policy blogs)

In the 3 months of the fellowship period, the fellow will be required to participate in different level of policy discussions, where their work and policy products will be presented and discussed.

Selection of the fellows

  • Applicants will be short-listed by the review team
  • Short-listed applicants will be interviewed
  • Final selection

Terms of the Award

The fellowship award will cover a fixed stipend for the period of three months. Travel and subsistence grants will be awarded to those fellows who need to travel for research work after approval by the mentor and the secretariat.

How to apply

Applicants should submit the following documents to asdnote@asd.org.np by 6 September 2015 with ‘Junior Policy Research Fellowship’ written in the subject line.

  • Letter of Intent: This letter should describe the applicant’s interest in this fellowship, the specific expectations from the fellowship in relation to the applicant’s career aspirations, the applicant’s skills and qualifications, and the benefit the applicant aspires to contribute to ASD’s aim on policy work.
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): The CV should include the applicant’s academic and professional background; a detailed description of the applicant’s previous relevant employment; a list of academic and (any) policy projects in which the applicant has been involved; list all scholarships, fellowships or internships the applicant has been awarded till date; and two referees.
  • Sample Write-up: The sample write-up should be able to demonstrate the applicant’s writing skills particularly on scientific writing. Write-ups could include articles both published and not published.

How will the selection process be organized?

The selection process will have two major stages:

  1. Pre-selection: Applicants will receive a response by 10 September 2015. Short-listed candidates will be called for the interview through email and telephone call.
  2. Final selection: Short-listed candidates will receive a response regarding the fellowship by 18 September 2015.

ASD Policy Research Fellowship 2015

Alliance for Social Dialogue (ASD) invites applications from prospective policy advocates in the category of Junior Policy Research Fellowship. This fellowship is an opportunity for young graduates with interests in policy area to sharpen their knowledge and skills in policy research and engage in policy-relevant research, analysis and advocacy. 

A.      Junior Policy Research Fellowship
The Junior Policy Research Fellowship is a program designed to develop the skills of recent graduates in policy research by working closely with the ASD team in preparing joint papers and briefs on a topic covering one of the areas of Policy Priorities, Policy Formulation, Policy Contestation, Policy Reform, Policy Review Process and Challenges in Policy Implementation. This year, the focus of the policy research is exclusively on the post-earthquake situation and the process of rebuilding society thereafter. The fellow will be responsible for collecting field based primary data which may require field visit of around 30 days.

Eligibility requirements:·

  • Must have completed Bachelor degree in any field of social sciences·
  • Must be a citizen of Nepal and residing in the country
  • Must be fluent in written Nepali or English

Interaction on the Review of ‘Post Earthquake Situation’

An interaction program on ‘The Post Earthquake Situation Review ‘ was organized by ASD in collaboration with Accountability Watch Committee (AWC) from 18-19 June 2015 in Kathmandu. The interaction was focused to assess the current situation and the response of the government and NGO/INGOs in the relief and reconstruction process of the quake affected districts.  The program concluded with an agreement to develop an effective monitoring mechanism involving the network of human rights defenders (HRDs) that would help to demand transparency and accountability on the relief and reconstruction work of the government and NGO/INGOs working in the districts. 22  human rights defenders and journalists from the earthquake affected districts participated in the program.
